Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom will temporarily raise the American Flag at the state Capitol to full height on Inauguration Day next week, joining several GOP governors and Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson in the decision.
Newsom's press office confirmed the decision to Fox News Digital on Wednesday night.
According to tradition, flags at the US Capitol and state buildings across the country are flown by staff in honor of former President Jimmy Carter's death on December 29, 2024.
Flags temporarily raised to full height will return to half-staff on Jan. 21 for the remainder of the 30-day mourning period, which ends on Jan. 28 – eight days after President-elect Donald Trump was sworn into office.

As of Thursday morning, Newsom is the only Democratic governor to issue the order, which comes as Southern California is devastated by Wildfires are dangerous.
Similar decisions were recently made by Idaho Gov. Brad Little, North Dakota Gov. Kelly Armstrong, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott – all of whom are Republicans.
Speaker of the House Johnson has also ordered the US Capitol flags to fly at full staff for Trump's inauguration on January 20.
Trump has criticized the possibility of flags being flown at half-staff for his establishment after Carter's death.

“Democrats are all 'condemned' about our beautiful American Flag being 'half-staffed' during my Inauguration,” Trump wrote on Social Truth on Jan. 3. They think it's very good, and they're very happy about it because, really, they don't like our Country, they only think about themselves. “
“Look at what they have done to our once GREAT America in the last four years – It's a complete mess! However, because of the death of President Jimmy Carter, my Flag, for the first time before the Inauguration of the future President, let him be in good condition,” he continued. “No one wants to see this, and no American would be happy about that. Let's see how it plays out. MAKE AMERICA AGAIN!”

The flags were flown by staff when former President Nixon was sworn in for his second term in 1973 after Nixon ordered the flags lowered after death of former President Truman.
