The former president signed the bipartisan Airline Deregulation Act on October 24, 1978 to prohibit “governments from regulating the price, route, or service of an airline in order to keep national commercial air travel competitive.”
After the bill was signed, airlines were allowed to choose their routes and determine how much they would charge passengers for air travel.
