ChatGPT supports voice conversations from the end of 2023but if you're new to the OpenAI chatbot, figuring out how to communicate with it can be challenging since there are multiple ways to do it. In this guide, I will explain the main differences between the two ChatGPT voice modes and how to use them.
What is ChatGPT Enhanced Voice Mode?
At the time of this writing, OpenAI offers two different ways to interact with ChatGPT using your voice: “Standard” and “Advanced.” The first one is available to all users, and the use is counted . Meanwhile, “Advanced” has more detailed restrictions.
As a free user, OpenAI is offering a monthly preview of the tool. Subscribe to the company's newsletter allows you to use Advanced Voice every day. OpenAI notes that daily limits may change, but in any case, the company promises to notify users 15 minutes before they reach their usage limit. Pro users can use Advanced Voice as much as they want, as long as they do so in a “reasonable” way and comply with company policy.
Beyond these limitations, the main difference between the two modes is the complexity of the underlying models. According to OpenAI, Advanced Voice is natively multimodal, meaning it can handle more than just text input. In practice, this means that Advanced Voice offers capabilities not available in standard mode, which is limited to reading a transcript of what you say to your phone. In addition to “hearing” your voice, ChatGPT in Advanced Voice can process video and images simultaneously. You can even use a chatbot to share your screen, allowing it to help you use the app on your phone.
Additionally, OpenAI claims that Advanced Voice's multimodality means ChatGPT can produce a more natural voice and better pick up nonverbal cues.
How to start a voice conversation with ChatGPT?
As mentioned above, OpenAI offers two different ways to interact with ChatGPT using your voice. The steps below will show you how to access them on your iPhone or Android device.
First you need to download the ChatGPT app (Android, iOS). The features described in this guide are not available through the ChatGPT integration offered by Apple. through its artificial intelligence package.
To use standard mode, tap the microphone icon to the right of the message panel. If you need to give the ChatGPT app access to your phone's microphone, you can do so through the settings menu.
Once ChatGPT begins recording your request, tap the check mark icon to have the chatbot begin processing your question. If you want it to reject what you said, click the x icon.
To use advanced mode, tap the waveform icon to the right of the message bar. Tap the microphone icon if you want to mute your phone's microphone. You can exit advanced mode at any time by pressing the x icon.
How to share a photo of your screen using ChatGPT during a voice conversation?
If you want to share your screen using ChatGPT or share a photo or video with it, tap the three dots icon and select Share screen, Upload photo or Take a photo.
If you don't see these options, update your ChatGPT app to the latest version. You may also live in a country where OpenAI does not yet offer these features. See below for more information.
How many voice options are available?
The first time you use Enhanced Voice Mode, you will be asked to select a voice tone for ChatGPT. OpenAI currently offers nine different options. I've listed them below along with descriptions of each provided by the company.

Raise the sidebar by clicking the two dashes.

Open Settings menu by tapping the three dots icon.

Scroll down and click Voice.

Select the voice you want to use ChatGPT.
You can also change the ChatGPT voice directly from the Advanced Voice interface by tapping the slider icon.
Are there regional restrictions on Enhanced Voice?
Some Enhanced Voice features are not available in all countries where OpenAI offers ChatGPT. In particular, the video, screen sharing and image uploading capabilities introduced by OpenAI in December are not available in the European Union, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.
