The remains of burned buildings line the Los Angeles area, as flames continue to ravage neighborhoods in the southern California city.
But among the walls falling on Monday, some buildings were not affected.
Through a combination of luck and engineering, a few houses in the neighboring areas were engulfed in a fire that destroyed many buildings and killed at least 24 people.
The difference was stark: A house on top of a hill stood among burning trees and bushes, and the untouched property could be seen through the windows. Below, the remains of other buildings – parts of roofs, walls and walls, as well as air-conditioning units and furniture – were bent and bent.
The Walsh house, featured in the television series Beverly Hills 90210, survived. So is his pristine lawn. Next door, the remains of a neighbor's house were stained with soot.
Some of the beach houses were spared, and lines of charred trees left buildings mixed in. Others had a different fate as roofs and trees fell into houses.
A man, David Slater, swept the driveway of his untidy home, next to the wreckage of his neighbor's car and a broken wall. There were also fallen trees and debris behind the gate of Slater's house.
Wildfires in California are showing signs of climate change. Atmospheric currents had dumped large amounts of water into the area, causing vegetation to grow. Then the drought dried up, making excellent food for the fire.
Firefighters are bracing for a return of dangerous winds that could fuel the fire again on Monday.
