according to The Washington PostHackers from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), a government agency that imposes economic and trade sanctions on countries and individuals, have the potential to obtain information on Chinese entities that the US government is considering financial sanctions against.
The Chinese-backed hacking group that compromised the U.S. Treasury Department in December to access employee workstations and unclassified documents also breached the Treasury Department's Office of Financial Research and the Treasury Secretary's Office, the report said.
BeyondTrust, a third-party software provider of identity management tools, alerted the agency to the cyber attack, which Treasury described as a “major cybersecurity incident” on Dec. 8.
The US Treasury did not immediately respond to TechCrunch's questions.
