
The Israeli government has approved a temporary extension of the ceasefire of Gaza for the next six weeks, covering the Muslim periods of Ramadan and the Jewish Passover.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's service made the message shortly after the first phase of the agreed earlier termination of fire expired at midnight on Saturday.
The Netanyahu service said that when a proposal to end the fire by US President Donald Trump Steve Witcof, half of the hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza – both alive and dead – will be released on the first day.
The rest of the hostages will be released “if an agreement is reached on a permanent termination of fire.”
Hamas has not publicly commented on the most recent Israeli move.
The Israeli government supported the extension of the truce after a four -hour meeting held by Netanyahu.
The Prime Minister's Office claims that Hamas has “refused” so far to support Vitcof's plan, adding that Israel would immediately start negotiations if the group changed its position.
The US Messenger's plan provides that Israel can return to the fight in 42 days if he believes that the second phase negotiations have failed.
On Friday night, Hamas said he would not agree to the expansion of the first phase without guarantees from US, Qatari and Egyptian mediators that the phase would ultimately take place.
