Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu will undergo surgery to remove his prostate, according to his office


Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu will have surgery to remove his prostate on Sunday after being diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, his office said.

The 75-year-old leader was examined at Hadassah Hospital on Wednesday, where he was “diagnosed with a urinary tract infection as a result of a benign prostate enlargement,” the prime minister's office said in a statement.

“As a result, tomorrow the prime minister will have an operation to remove his prostate,” the report says.

In March, Netanyahu underwent a hernia operation, and in July of last year doctors implanted a pacemaker after a medical scare.

Sunday's procedure came hours after the Israeli military announced it would be carried out raided one of the last functioning hospitals in northern Gaza and detained its director.

Israel is waging war against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip for nearly 15 months since the October 7, 2023, attacks. in the south of Israel, as a result of which about 1,200 people were killed and about 250 people were kidnapped. About 100 Israelis remain captive in Gaza, with about a third believed to have died.

More than 45,400 Palestinians have been killed and more than 108,000 wounded in the war, according to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry. His count does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

Earlier this month, Netanyahu took his position a lengthy trial on corruption charges. This week Israel's attorney general ordered the police to open an investigation into Netanyahu's wife on suspicion of persecuting political opponents and a witness in a corruption trial.
