Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni traveled to Mar-a-Lago to visit President-elect Donald J. Trump for an informal meeting on Saturday, three people familiar with the trip said.
The visit comes just days before Ms. Meloni is set to meet President Biden in Rome for an official visit to Italy and the Vatican from January 9 to 12.
Ms. Maloney and Mr. Trump have expressed mutual appreciation in the past, and her visit is one of the first of several visits by a foreign leader to the president-elect's Florida mansion since being elected. The meeting boosts hopes among Ms. Meloni's supporters that the conservative Italian prime minister will become an ally of Mr. Trump in Europe.
Much of that role will involve mediating tensions between other European leaders and Mr Trump, who has threatened to launch a trade war with the continent, including reducing US support for Ukraine in its war with some NATO countries and Russia.
The agenda for Saturday night's meeting was unclear, but observers expected the two leaders to discuss the issues.
