The 23-year-old gymnast is currently involved in a protest against a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) which demoted her from third place in the event to fifth in the floor exercise final. women.
Romania's Ana Barbosu initially scored higher than Chiles after the American finished her routine. Then, after the request of the American coach, the judges evaluated the picture, changed the points, and promoted Chiles to the third place, which caused the first controversy and strong reactions from the Romanian people.
The decision to award the medal to Chiles instead resulted in the first All-Black podium in the history of Olympic gymnastics, as she joined the team of Simone Biles and Rebecca Andrade of Brazil.
But, on the last day of the Olympics, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decided that Chiles' appeal was sent after one minute, and they changed his points to put him back in the place fifth. The next day, 11 Aug, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided that Chiles must return the medal.
However, after the Olympics ended in August, USA Today reported that Chiles and the rest of the US Olympic team “without intention” of returning the award, while they continue to appeal the IOC's decision.
Chiles' lawyers have argued that his coach applied in time and that there is video evidence to prove it, and that the official who made the decision to strip Chiles of the award had ties and Romania.
“Chiles is asking the Supreme Court to find that the CAS decision was deficient for two reasons,” Chile's lawyers said in a statement. at Olympics.com.

“First, CAS violated Chiles' “fundamental right to be heard” by refusing to take into account the video evidence that showed his question was sent in time – contradicting the findings of the CAS decision.
Second, the entire CAS process was unfair because Chiles was not properly informed that Hamid G. Gharavi, the President of the CAS group that revoked Chiles' bronze medal and instead provided a Romanian exercise expert, he had a serious conflict of interest: Mr. Gharavi has worked as a consultant for Romania for almost ten years and actively represented Romania during the CAS dispute. “
Chiles also appealed to the Swiss Federal Supreme Court to overturn the CAS decision. He argued that he was not given a fair chance to defend himself and that CAS did not consider the video evidence properly.
Chiles and his teammates have been open about the emotional pain that losing the medal has had on him in the months since the Olympics ended.
Chiles gave his first sit-down interview on the incident this week during the panel Forbes Power Women Forum 2024 in September. The gymnast choked up and cried when asked about it.
“For me, everything that happened is not about the medal, it's about the color of my skin,” said Chiles.
Chiles first said it faced “racially motivated attacks” from social media users in a statement sent to X on Aug. 15. When Chiles won the bronze medal, it marked the first gymnastics stage in Olympic history that had three black teams.

“It's the fact that there are things that led to this level of being an athlete and I felt like everything was taken.”
This controversy has brought international scrutiny on the judges who marked the incident. The Center of Arbitration for Sport's (CAS) and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) released a joint statement on August 15 criticizing the International Federation of Sports (FIG) and the judging panel for the result.
“If the FIG had put in place such a mechanism or arrangement, a lot of heartache could have been avoided,” the CAS ad-hoc panel said in a release. “The panel expresses the hope that the FIG will draw the consequences of this case, in relation to these three extraordinary Athletes and for other Athletes and their supporting staff, in the future, so that this does not it didn't happen again.”
