Earlier this year, Meta announced Movie Gen, an AI-powered video editing tool that looked (at least in the sample clips he released). However, Meta said at the time that this was still a research project and it had no plans to make these features available to users in the near future.
But now it seems that Movie Gen may be coming to Instagram sooner rather than later. Instagram top manager Adam Mosseri posted a message previewing what kind of seamless AI-powered changes will eventually be possible, saying the company is “hoping to bring this to Instagram next year.”
In the video, Mosseri says Meta is “working on some really interesting AI tools” for video creators. “You should be able to do whatever you want with your videos,” he says. “You should be able to change your clothes, change the environment you're sitting in, or add a chain—whatever you can think of.”
During the short clip, Mosseri's background and outfit change several times, including a short shot of him looking like a Muppet-inspired character. Throughout the clip, transitions look fairly smooth, with no obvious AI artifacts. Of course, this won't necessarily be the case when Movie Gen actually becomes available and videos of its abilities aren't entirely controlled by Meta. But if it works as well as Mosseri's teaser, it could open up some interesting opportunities for Instagram creators.
It's probably not a coincidence that Meta is just teasing this feature. OpenAI presented its video generation model to subscribers. Meta has repeatedly stated that it wants its AI assistant to be the “most used” in and around the world. which was also published today, the company reported that Meta AI has “almost” 600 million monthly users.
Unfortunately, Mosseri didn't specify when exactly the Movie Gen features might arrive on Instagram other than sometime in 2024. But he said there would be “even more” from the company.
