The Trump Administration and the Ministry of Government of Elon Musk (Doge) moved to take control – and possibly closed – an agency set up to protect consumers as a result of the financial crisis in 2007-8.

The Financial Protection Bureau of Consumer (CFPB) monitors banks and owns huge three of the user data.

As part of the US Federal Reserve, CFPB is an independent agency, but Trump's budget director was installed as its director on Friday, and Doge employees gained access to the agency's computer systems.

About 100 workers protested outside the CFPB office on Saturday.

The agency is the newest US government department, which is aimed by a Dodge, an unofficial cost reduction group that Donald Trump has given a broad freedom of freedom to reduce government spending and eliminate employees.

Musk and Dog have already led the USAID elimination efforts, the main foreign aid agency in the United States, and Doge employees have also been observed in several other federal government services.

The number of staff of the Dogi, the budget and its operating structure is unclear. Musk and the White House have provided few details about Dogetta's operations, and the names of Doge employees are the most of the leaks of civil servants.

CBS, the BBC American news partner, said Doge representatives have gained access to CFPB internal systems, including staff roles and financial records.

The Wall Street Journal announced on Friday that Doge representatives received “reading only” access to CFPB computer systems.

The agency regulates banks and financial institutions with over $ 10 billion (8 billion British pounds) assets.

It was created in 2011 as part of the reforms after the big recession crash in 2007-8, which was partly caused by a mortgage loan market crash to underestimate the United States.

It has about 1750 employees and an annual budget of $ 758 million.

It offers complaints about customer financial products and has some power to make rules for financing consumers. In 2024, for example, it limited the delayed credit card fees to $ 8 (6.45 British pounds), although this change in the rule was delayed by a legal challenge.

The agency has long been the goal of Republicans who have accused it of excessive, unjustified restriction of banks and the use of money from fines and settlements for the financing of left -wing activist groups.

Watch: Ros Atkins on … Musk, Doge and the US Government

The first page of the CFPB website returned an error message on Saturday as much of the rest of the site seemed to work as normal.

Top Democrat at the Chamber of Financial Services Committee Maxine Waters has released a statement that claims that the CFPB DJ systematically kills the CFPB.

“Taking up Musk from CFPB is a crisis with five alarms and a frightening violation of millions of Americans for data confidentiality. As it stands, Musk can now see the personal information of people who, after being deceived by bad actors, have reached for The CFPB In a moment of despair, “Waters said.

Waters said this data may include bank statements, credit card information, social security number and medical information.

In a statement, the National Union of Ministry of Finance employees, which represents CFPB employees, said Dodge's activities represent “potentially dangerous invasion”. The Union said it would pursue all roads to protect private data from users and financial institutions.

On Friday, Musk wrote CFPB RIP in his X account. By publishing several times an hour, he reiterates allegations of widespread crime, fraud and abuse throughout the country and indicated that he would try to close the desk.

Last month, President Trump fired CFPB director Rohit Chopra, who was appointed by President Joe Biden and installed Finance Minister Scott Bensten as head of the agency.

But on Friday, Trump made another switch by controlling the Russell Wutrous agency, a newly approved director of the Management and Budget Office.

VOUGH is the author of project 2025, A list of proposals issued by the Inheritance Foundation, a cerebral trust – One of which calls CFPB to be removed.

The BBC contacted CFPB, the White House and the Doge spokeswoman for comment.
