New York and the Nasdaq will be closed on January 9 for a national day of mourning following the death of Jimmy Carter.


The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will be closed for the late President Jimmy Carter's National Day of Mourning on January 9.

NYSE, NYSE American Equities, NYSE American Options, NYSE Arca Equities, NYSE Arca Options, NYSE Chicago and NYSE National will be closed on Jan. 9 in honor of the former president, the NYSE said Monday.

All close US stock and options markets Separately, the Nasdaq said it would be similarly closed for the day.

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, has died at the age of 100

Carter, who served in the White House from 1977 to 1981, died on Sunday. He was 100 years old.

A national day of mourning for Carter was declared President Bidenwho at the same time ordered public buildings and the military to fly their flags at half-mast for 30 days.

The NYSE announced that it was flying the American flag at half-mast “in honor of President Carter during the period of mourning.”

The Nasdaq exchange said it “observed a moment of silence at 9:20 a.m. ET today with a message on the Nasdaq Tower in honor of the former president.”

Carter's wife, former first lady Rosalyn Carter, died last year.

The former president is survived by four children, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, the Carter Center announced Sunday.

“My father was a hero not only to me, but to all who believe in peace, human rights and selfless love,” his son Chip said in a statement announcing his death. “My brothers, sisters and I shared him with the rest of the world through these shared beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs. “
