Upton told The Associated Press in 2020 that he was getting ready to shave when he heard the first torpedo hit Utah. He remembered that no one on board knew what was causing the ship to shake. Then, the second torpedo hit and the ship began to list and capsize.
The then 22-year-old swam to Ford Island, where he jumped into the ditch to avoid it. Japanese planes are circling the area. He stayed for about 30 minutes until a truck arrived to take him to safety.

Upton says he doesn't care to talk about what happened during the attack. Instead, what upset him was that he kept losing his shipmates over the years. As of 2020, there are only three members of the Utah crew still alive, including himself.
