OpenAI has started building its robotics team

OpenAI is known for its AI modelswhich until now exists mainly on cloud servers, its website and in its applications for PCs and mobile devices.

However, the company does not limit its ambitions to the field of software: Today on X, Caitlin Kalinowski, a member of the technical staff at OpenAI and formerly the head of AR glasses at Metaposted a message stating that the company is hiring a first hardware robotics roles.

These include an EE sensor engineer “to help us design sensor arrays for our robots,” and a robotics mechanical design engineer to create “gears, actuators, motors and connectors for robots.”

The listings also include a description of the new effort:

Our robotics team is focused on solving general robotics and pushing towards AG – level of intelligence in dynamic, real-world situations. Working across the entire model stack, we integrate state-of-the-art hardware and software to explore a wide range of robotic form factors. We try to seamlessly blend advanced AI capabilities with physical physical limitations. “

Kalinowski herself announced that she was hiring at Open AI a little more than that two months ago “To guide robotics and consumer hardware.”

Previously, OpenAI would have been working on hardware with a predecessor Apple lead designer Jony Iveand the company has partnered with robotics startup Figure to provide the modules that will power the latter's humanoid robots.

However, Kalinowski's new appointment and job listings mark the company's biggest and heaviest investment in building its own robotics division to date, and could be ultimately meaning it will compete with Figure.

It would not be a new place for OpenAI to be there, however, as it also competes with and takes investment money from Microsoft.
