This is not the first incident of political violence in Oregon.
During the 2024 presidential election, an unidentified suspect was caught on surveillance video setting a ballot box on fire with an incendiary device in Portland, one of several such incidents in Oregon and Washington states.
Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey called the incident “a direct attack on democracy” as it happened just days before Election Day.
The first ballot box fire occurred on Oct. 8 between 3:30 am and 4 am in Vancouver, Washington, The FBI said. No votes were wasted in the event.

Two other incidents occurred on Oct. 28 between 2 am and 4 am in Vancouver and Portland. Hundreds of ballots were destroyed in drop boxes in Vancouver, while officials said three were destroyed in Portland.
All three incidents involved improvised explosive devices placed outside the boxes. The researchers found enough information from the tools to combine all three fires.
Authorities are offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to arrest and prosecution of the suspect.
