Manmohan Singh, p Former Prime Minister of India who many people consider to be the one who prepared the economic reform plan of this country, was cremated after the state funeral on Saturday as politicians and people mourned his funeral.
The former president, who was also known for negotiating a nuclear deal with the United States, died on Thursday, aged 92.
Singh's body was taken on Saturday morning to his Congress party headquarters in New Delhi, where party leaders and activists paid their respects and chanted “Manmohan Singh lives forever”.
Abhishek Bishnoi, a party leader, said Singh's death was a great loss for the country. “He spoke little, but his skills and actions spoke louder than his words,” he said.
Later, Singh's body was taken to the crematorium for his last rites while soldiers played drums.
Government officials, politicians and relatives paid their last respects to Singh, whose coffin was decorated with flowers and wrapped in the Indian flag. Security personnel honored him by giving him a gun salute.
Indian President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who called Singh one of the country's “greatest leaders”, as well as several cabinet ministers attended the funeral.
Singh's body was then moved to the pyre with religious music played and cremated.
Officials announced that a seven days of mourning and ban all cultural and recreational activities during that time. Government buildings across India fly the national flag.
