Pope Francis appeared on St. Peter Square in the Vatican after his discharge from hospital after five weeks of treatment.
The Pope briefly appeared on the stage in a wheelchair, with a breathable tube under his nose.
“Hello everyone,” he said, waving in cheerful crowds. “Happy Sunday to all of you, thank you very much.”
88 -year -old Pope was discharged from a hospital in Rome on March 23 and appeared at his window, after which he will offer a blessing.
Doctors said he would need at least two months of rest at his residence. On Friday, the Vatican stated that his health was improving and he was “in a good mood” while continuing his work activities.
The Pope was admitted to hospital on February 14 for an infection that led to double pneumonia. One of the doctors told him that he had two critical episodes during his treatment where “his life was in danger.”
As of Friday, the Pope improved slightly in breathing, movement and speaking, the Vatican said. The last blood tests also showed a slight improvement in his lung infection.
The Pope requires less extra oxygen, but continues to take it during the day. At night, he receives a high stream of oxygen through his nose as needed.
Throughout his life, he has suffered a number of health problems, including some of his lungs at 21, making it more proposed to infections.
Pope Francis, who is from Argentina, has been a pope for 12 years.
