Italy Prime Minister Georgia Meloni visited the Pope in a hospital, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs.
The 88-year-old was admitted to Gemeli's hospital in Rome on Friday with a respiratory infection.
Meloni said in a statement that she was “very happy that she had found him alert and responsive. We joked as always. He did not lose his proverbial sense of humor.”
She offered him the best wishes for a speedy recovery on behalf of the Italian government and the whole country.
Earlier in the week, the Vatican said that medical tests and chest X-ray showed a “complex picture”.
Pneumonia is a serious infection that can ignite and mark the lungs, causing chest pain and impedes breathing.
The Vatican stated in his latest update to Pontif's fragile health that he was on the lookout and had breakfast.
An employee of the Vatican said he was still able to get out of bed and sit in an armchair in his hospital room and continues to do some work.
He canceled the papal audience scheduled for Saturday and is not well enough to attend a liturgy on Sunday.
Outside the hospital, well -wishers and worshipers continue to gather to pray, to illuminate candles and to write notes for encouragement.
