Romania President Klaus Johannis resigned after pressure for him to withdraw before the re -execution of the presidential election, which were controversially canceled last year.
The vote in December was overturned by Romania's best court after allegations of a Russian state intervening.
Outgoing Johannis, Pro-Es Liberal, said he would remain in office until he was elected in May.
But it was heavily criticized by the far -right politicians and their supporters, who performed well in the first round of voting in December.
Their criticism inspired tens of thousands of Romanians to take the street last month in protest of election cancellation.
Opposition MPs have begun a proposal in parliament again on Monday to move to the president's suspension.
In response, Johannis said he would withdraw in an attempt to limit what he said would be a “harm” and a dividing referendum on the country.
“To spare Romania and Romanian citizens from a crisis … I leave from the service of the President of Romania,” he said. He said he would officially stand Wednesday.
