DETROIT – Both General Motors AND Ford engine on Friday announced its best annual U.S. new vehicle sales since 2019, before the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and years-long supply chain problems.
These results are in line with the expectations of the entire industry towards car manufacturers. Market research firms expected U.S. automakers to report combined sales of nearly 16 million vehicles in 2024, which would mark the industry's best year since sales of about 17 million units in 2019.
“The driving force behind our business is new vehicles across our portfolio with great design and performance that help our dealers satisfy more customers. We are entering 2025 with significant momentum,” Rory Harvey, GM's president of global markets, said in the release.
GM reported 2024 sales of more than 2.7 million vehicles, up 4.3% from the year before. In 2019, the carmaker sold 2.9 million units.
GM said the sales were driven by sales growth for all four U.S. brands and a roughly 50% increase in electric vehicle sales to more than 114,400 units.
A similar trend occurred at Ford, which saw a noticeable increase in sales of its “electrified” vehicles, including electric vehicles and hybrids.
Ferry it was announced on Friday Sales in 2024 were 2.08 million vehicles, up from just under 2 million in 2023. In 2019, the automaker sold 2.42 million vehicles in the US. In the fourth quarter, Ford reported sales growth of 8.8% year-over-year to 530,660 vehicles sold.
The automaker said full-year sales of its traditional combustion engine vehicles rose 0.2% from 2023, while sales of electrified vehicles rose 38.3% year-over-year.
Electrified vehicles, including hybrids and electric vehicles, accounted for 13.7% of Ford's total annual sales.
