Ten people were killed and 30 injured after the driver of a vehicle plowed into a crowd on historic Bourbon Street in New Orleans, according to NOLA Ready, the city's emergency preparedness agency.
New Orleans police previously said they were responding to a mass casualty incident, including fatalities. NOLA Ready advised people to stay away from the area.
Local media reported that the ramming occurred as a large crowd gathered to celebrate the New Year in the city's French Quarter at around 3:15 a.m. local time.
CBS quotes witnesses who said the driver drove into the crowd at high speed, then got out and started shooting, to which police returned fire.
NOLA Ready said the injured were taken to five local hospitals.
The incident occurred hours before the start of the Allstate Sugar Bowl, a college football quarterfinal at the Caesars Superdome where thousands of spectators are expected.
