Tesla is voluntarily recalling about 239,000 of its electric vehicles in the U.S. to fix a problem that can cause backup cameras to fail, the company revealed filings published on Friday on the website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“A rearview camera that does not display an image limits the driver's rearward view, increasing the risk of a crash,” Tesla wrote in a letter to the regulator. The recall affects Tesla's 2024-2025 Model 3 and Model S sedans and 2023-2025 Model X and Model Y SUVs.
The company also reported in confirmation letter that it has “already released a free OTA software update” that could solve some of the vehicle camera issues.
According to data, Tesla carried out 16 recalls in the US in 2024, affecting 5.14 million of its electric vehicles NHTSA data. Remedial measures included a combination of over-the-air software updates and parts replacement. More than 40% of last year's recalls involved problems with the company's newest vehicle, the Cybertruck, an angular steel pickup truck that Tesla has started delivering to customers at the end of 2023.
Regarding the latest recall, the company said it received 887 warranty claims and dozens of field reports, but informed NHTSA that it was not aware of any collisions that resulted in injury, death or other consequences of rearview camera failure.
Other customers with vehicles that “suffered a circuit board failure or stress that could lead to a circuit board failure” that caused the backup camera to fail can have their vehicles' computers replaced by Tesla for free, the company said.
Tesla did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment.
