Texas A&M University pulled the brakes on an upcoming conference tour after Gov. Greg Abbott, R., found that only applicants of a particular race it can be there.
On Monday, the civil rights activist Christopher Rufo posted a photo of the university sponsoring the Annual PhD Project Conference in Chicago. The application explained that the conference “is designed for historically underrepresented individuals who are considering business doctoral studies,” and are Black/American, Latinx/Hispanic American or Native American students. US/Canada only eligible.

The post at the end caught Abbott's eye Monday evening, which made him threaten the president of the university from his job if the issue is not resolved.

“Hell, no. It's against Texas law and violates the US Constitution. It will be fixed immediately or the president will be gone,” Abbott warned.
The university eventually issued a statement on its X account, reiterating that it does not discriminate based on race. to comply with SB-17state law prohibiting diversity, equity and inclusive offices in Texas public schools.
“Texas A&M does not support any organization, meeting, activity or activity that excludes people based on race, creed, gender, age or any other discrimination. The intent of SB-17 is very clear in the matter that. We will continue to respect the letter and purpose of the law,” read the post.
In a statement sent to Fox News DigitalUniversity President Mark A. Welsh III accepted the request in question and acknowledged that the meeting itself was “inconsistent” with state law, canceling the trip altogether.
“While the proper vetting and licensing process for such events was followed, I do not believe that we fully considered the spirit of our country's law in making the decision to before participating,” read the statement. “The limitations of this meeting in terms of the acceptable pace of attendance are inconsistent with the intent of SB-17, and as a result, we will not be sending anyone to participate in this meeting.”

Welsh continued, “Texas A&M faculty and staff attend hundreds, if not thousands, of conferences and other events during each academic year. We need to ensure that attendance at events which are in line with the clear guidance we have been given by our governing bodies.”
This statement has been sent to the staff and faculty at the Mays School of Business.

The Annual PhD Project Conference was established by the Pathways to Research and Doctoral Careers Consortium (PREDOC) and will be held in March. PREDOC website described the application process as “unique” and “tailored to underrepresented individuals considering business doctoral studies.”
