The Academy of Cinema Arts and Sciences apologized on Friday after hundreds of his members criticized him for not supporting Oscar Hamdan Balal, Palestinian, who was recently detained by Israeli settlers.
The Academy apologized for not “directly (admitting) Mr. Balal and the movie by name” after nearly 700 voting members, including numerous A-list actors, signed a letter criticizing them.

He said earlier this week that He was attacked by Israeli settlers before being detained by the Israeli military. Later he is released.
Initially, the Academy responded to the incident on Wednesday, but it did not treat D -n Balal directly, which led to Hollywood control.
The statement led to the rebuke of more than 700 members of the Academy's vote by letter. Those who signed included: Mark Rufalo, Javier Bardem, Olivia Colman, Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Thompson, Penelop Cruz and Richard Gere. Directors Jonathan Glazer and Ava Duvernay also signed it.
“It is indefinitely for the organization to recognize a movie with a prize in the first week of March and then not protect its filmmakers just a few weeks later,” the letter said.
The letter noted how difficult it is to win an Oscar and the steep race he has encountered in order to be recognized as the winner in the most prestigious honor in the movie worldwide. It says that the movie has won without the typical expensive campaigns that most movies pay to win a prize.
“Targeting Balal is not just an attack on a director – it's an attack on everyone who dares to testify and tell uncomfortable truths,” the letter said.
The Academy released a statement on Friday, indicating the director and apologized.
“We regret that we were unable to directly admit to the Balal and the movie by name,” the message said. “We sincerely apologize to G -n Balal and all the artists who felt unsupported by our previous statement and want to make it clear that the Academy condemns violence from this species everywhere in the world.
“We are disgusted with the suppression of freedom of expression in all circumstances.”
Mr. Balal was released one day after being beaten by settlers and then taken by soldiers while he was in an ambulance, said his co-director Juvel Abraham earlier this week.
Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) denied this claim. They said that three Palestinians and Israeli were detained on suspicion of “rock throwing” in the security forces.
