The mining industry plays a key role in the world's energy transition, providing critical minerals and metals needed for new, green technologies. It is also facing pressure to reduce its own carbon footprint, and to protect communities affected by its mining activity around the world. BHP chief executive officer Mike Henry says the world's largest mining company is at the forefront of those changes, boosting production while focusing on sustainability. “This is fundamental to the BHP strategy (…) The world also has a great need for other metals and minerals. If we are to do this in a way that does not have negative consequences for other aspects of environmental conservation, we have to set and maintain high standards.
