The driver whose yellow cab hit six people when he jumped a ramp in New York City The shopping district on Christmas Day was experiencing a medical emergency at the time, police said.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) confirmed to Fox News Digital that a 58-year-old truck driver drove off the road, throwing the vehicle into a group of pedestrians in Herald Square at 6th Avenue and West 34th Street after 4 pm ET on Christmas Day.

The NYPD would not elaborate on the type medical emergenciesbut he said the driver was taken to hospital after the incident and is in a stable condition.

Three others were also hospitalized, police said. Authorities said a 9-year-old boy was taken to the hospital with cuts to his leg; a 41-year-old woman was taken to hospital with a head injury; and a 49-year-old woman was taken to hospital with a leg injury.
