Daniel Chapo will take the position with 71 percent of the votes according to the court's decision
The High Court of Justice in Mozambique has confirmed that the ruling Frelimo party has won the October election which led to protests by opposition groups who claim the votes were rigged.
The Constitutional Council confirmed that the member of the ruling party in Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, won more than 65 percent of the votes. The court decision reviews the results of the National Election Commission (CNE) in a few days later the election had Chapo with 71 percent of the vote.
The party increased its majority in the parliament.
Chapo, who is 47 years old, will take over the position in January. He will be the first President born after independence.
Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane said the October 9 polls were rigged to vote in favor of Frelimo and another count showed they got enough votes to take office.
During the election, foreign observers said the election was not free or fair. At that time European Union vote watchers see “unnecessary change”
The country's supreme court makes the final decision on the election and its ruling is expected to spark protests in Mozambique, a southern African country of about 35 million people that has been ruled by Frelimo since Portugal's independence in 1975.
At least 130 people have been killed in clashes with police, according to the monitoring group Plataforma Decide since the October election.
