The Detroit Lions technically didn't need to win Monday night's game against the San Francisco 49ers, begging the question of whether head coach Dan Campbell will pull his players at some point in this game.
But, as Campbell has shown us many times in the past, he will not give up under any circumstances. And after saying it would be “full throttle” on the West Coast this week, he meant it.
The lions came down the 49ers40-34, where the starters played the entire game on both sides of the ball.

Detroit remembers vividly what happened in January at Levi's Stadium, when it won a big first-half play in the NFC Championship game. So, there was some revenge in this even though the 49ers were eliminated statistically from playoff contention.
Jared Goff went for three touchdowns, going 26-of-34 for 303 yards in another stellar performance for the Lions. He found Sam LaPorta and Amon-Ra St. Brown, but to achieve the Lions' best success was another late game that worked perfectly.
Earlier this season, it was St. Brown returned to Jahmyr Gibbs for a score against the team. Arizona Cardinals. Well, the same concept was used when St. Brown caught a quick pass from Goff, but the speedy Jameson Williams got behind him and took the ball to the house on a 41-yard run.

At that point, it was a 14-13 game, as Brock Purdy and the 49ers offense had clicked well to start the game.
Purdy scored three straight touchdowns against Detroit to open it, including a strike on rookie Ricky Pearsall on the game's opening play. Then, he needed just six plays on the next drive to find Kyle Juszczyk from nine yards out, and the third was Purdy's scramble for nine yards to make it 21-13.
However, the second half saw the strength of the Lions that many teams have felt this year. It started with a quick opening drive that saw LaPorta reach the end zone from six yards out. But, once again, the 49ers responded with a rebound, as Deebo Samuel found his way to pay to take the lead back, 28-21.

This late battle would only come down if one team forced the issue, and that's exactly what Aaron Glenn's Lions defense did after making it 28-24 with a Jake Bates field goal .
Kerby Joseph, who currently leads the NFL in passing yards this season, picked off Purdy's pass over Pearsall's head. And when Detroit commits turnovers, points usually follow.
That's when the arrest of St. Brown's four-yard catch came for the Lions, who went on a fourth-and-goal to take a 31-28 lead. The next few shots saw Jake Moody's field goal miss from 58 yards, followed by another stab by Joseph, which gave him nine for the year.
That interception put the nail in the coffin, as Gibbs, who rushed for 117 yards on just 18 carries, broke off a 30-yard run to add to the Lions' offensive attack.
Purdy was eventually injured on the 49ers' final play of the game, but backup Josh Dobbs added the score with a touchdown run to make it a 40-34 game. But the onside kick attempt to keep the game alive was recovered by Detroit.

Pearsall had 141 yards for a game-high eight, while George Kittle matched his eight receptions for 112 yards. Jauan Jennings also finished with 67 yards. catch seven.
