particle for direct object Labor union Representing about 45,000 U.S. dockers, it reached a tentative agreement with port employers on Wednesday, averting a strike at Eastern and Gulf Coast ports later this month.
In a joint statement, the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and the United Maritime Alliance (USMX) announced that they had agreed on a six-year master contract that would allow the latter to approve the terms of the final contract.
“We are pleased to announce that the ILA and USMX have reached a tentative agreement on a new six-year ILA-USMX contract, subject to ratification, thus avoiding any work stoppage on January 15, 2025,” the two sides said in a joint statement. The statement of agreement protects current ILA jobs and creates a framework for implementing technologies that will create more jobs while modernizing East and Gulf Coast ports – making them safer and more efficient and increasing their capacity to Keeping our supply chain strong creates.
Details of the tentative agreement will not be released to ILA ranking members to allow review and approval of the final document.

“This is a win-win agreement that creates ILA jobs, supports American consumers and businesses, and keeps the American economy a key global market leader,” the two sides added.
Both parties signed a tentative deal in October – which gave workers a 62 percent pay rise over six years – to end the three-day strike, but walked away. Automation issues not resolved
But the two sides were still deadlocked over automation, leading to the latest round of talks. If no agreement was reached and a second strike occurred, the agreed-upon wage agreement that ended the first strike would be taken off the table and both sides would be back to square one.

President Biden They cheered the deal on Wednesday evening.
“Collective bargaining plays an important role in building a strong middle and bottom-up economy,” he said. “Today's tentative agreement between the International Longshoremen's Association and the United States Maritime Union shows that labor and management can come together for the benefit of workers and their employers.”
