The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) raises the Costco egg recall to the highest level of risk over salmonella fears

On Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration slapped the eggs from Handsome Brook Farms sold at Costco stores in the southeastern United States with the highest risk level of Category 1.

Category 1, the FDA notes on its site, means there is a recall where “there is a reasonable possibility that use or exposure to an offending product will cause adverse health consequences or death.”

Last month, more than 10,000 cartons of eggs were sold Costco's signature Kirkland brand They were voluntarily recalled over concerns that they might be contaminated with salmonella, although at the time no one had been sickened by the potentially contaminated eggs.

The eggs were sold in Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee At 25 Costco stores starting November 22, 2024.

Handsome Brook Farms initiated the recall after determining the eggs were not intended for retail distribution and were instead packaged and distributed in retail packages.

“Additional supply chain controls and retraining are underway to prevent a recurrence,” the company said.

FOX Business has reached out to Handsome Brook Farms for comment on the FDA's serious classification of the recall.

This recall only applies to units with a Julian code of 327 and a use-by date of January 5, 2025.

“No other products are affected by this recall,” the FDA said.

Salmonella is one Foodborne illness which can cause fever, diarrhea and nausea and can be life-threatening in very young and old people and people who are immunocompromised.
