The wounded Palestinians die due to lack of supply, says the surgeon

An American surgeon who has been working in two hospitals in Gaza in the last three weeks has said the wounded Palestinian patients have died due to the lack of equipment and supplies.

Dr. Mark Perlmute says that doctors had to work in operating rooms without soap, antibiotics or X-ray facilities, as Israel resumed its offensive against Hamas in Gaza.

A 15-year-old girl who was struck by the Israeli machine gun while riding a bicycle was one of the many injured children, whom Dr. Perlmuter said he should work.

The Israeli government said that the renewed attacks that its military commit to Gaza are aimed at forcing Hamas to release all other hostages.

Dr. Perlmuter talks to the BBC shortly after the end of his second trip to Gaza – the first was about a year ago. Critical to Israel's behavior in the strip, he had previously called for an embargo weapon and said his attacks on Gaza were a genocide that Israel categorically denies.

This time he worked at Al-Aksa Hospital in Deir Al-Bala in the center of the territory, and then at Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza.

He works for the Auxilium of Humanity in Gaza as part of a broader health organization program (WHO).

He was in Nasser hospital when he was struck by an Israeli air strike aimed at Ismail Barhum, head of Hamas's finance.

Hamas said Barhum was being treated by injuries he had suffered in an early Israeli attack. The Israeli military denied this, saying that he was in the hospital “to perform acts of terrorism.”

Dr. Perlmuter told the BBC that Barhum was in the hospital to receive additional medical treatment. He says that as a patient in a hospital, Barhum had the right to be protected under the Geneva Convention.

The human price of the latest Israeli offensive was an example of a pearlmaker of two 15 years -including the girl on the bicycle -who were introduced into the operating room in each of the hospitals where he works for one week.

“Both were macered and grated by Apache weapons,” says Dr. Perlmuter.

The girl, in his words, “will be lucky if he holds three of her limbs.”

Dr. Perlmute says that the people at the scene told the ambulance team, who scored the young girl in the hospital that she had been hit by a shooting by an Israeli military helicopter.

He says she rode a bike alone and she arrived at the hospital without a backpack or anything else that could cause suspicion. Graphic images from the operating mass show catastrophic legs and arm wounds.

The boy was driving in a car with his grandmother after receiving warnings of evacuation from the north, says Dr. Perlmuther.

“Then the car was attacked by two Apache guns. The grandmother was broken at the scene and died,” he said.

“The boy came in without a leg on his right. The vascular repair on his left took five hours – the repair of the nerves on his left side failed and the next day he demanded an amputation of the elbow level – he may have survived.”

Dr. Perlmutter has also provided graphic photos of the boy's wounds.

In a statement, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said it was “not aimed at not included individuals.”

“The IDF works in accordance with international law, focusing only on military purposes, while taking possible measures to mitigate the harm of civilians,” he told the BBC.

The statement also said that IDF did not provide “sufficient information” to directly deal with the incidents that he described Dr. Perlmutter.

“IDF takes action to deal with incorrect incidents that deviate from its orders. IDF examines such incidents and takes appropriate measures when justified,” the statement said.

Under such conditions, the perlmute emphasized the commitment and dedication of the Palestinian medical staff – over and beyond the efforts of foreign doctors like him.

“The levels of stress on us are not even accessible to what is happening even to Palestinian medical students who work with us, whose levels of stress are as insane, as for nurses and techniques in the operating room, let alone Palestinian surgeons,” he said.

“They all abandon their families, voluntarily work and often work without pay. They work at the same hours we do – and we go home in a month they don't.

Most gas hospitals are in operation or barely manage to function. Dr. Perlmute compares medical establishments in Gaza to the place where he lives in North Carolina. There are numerous traumatic centers there, but they would be buried, he says if they had to deal with the mass influx of victims that were the result of the first day of Israel's resumption of his war against Hamas.

“The small community hospital, the al -Axa, is the tenth of the size of any of the facilities in my home country – maybe a smaller one – and did well with these terrible injuries – however, due to lack of equipment, many, many of these patients have died that would certainly not die in a better equipped hospital,” he said.

On Saturday, UN Humanitarian Chief Tom Fletcher described the current situation in Gaza as terrible.

“All gaza entrance points have been closed for loads since the beginning of March. At the border, the food is rotting, the drug is leaking and the vital medical equipment is stuck,” he said.

“If the basic principles of humanitarian law are still counted, the international community must act to maintain them.”

On March 2, the Israeli government closed the border crossings with gas and stopped humanitarian aid.
