Multiple casualties are feared in New Orleans after a vehicle reportedly plowed into a crowd on popular Bourbon Street, the BBC's US news partner CBS reported.
A New Orleans police spokesman said “initial reports indicate that a car may have plowed into a group of people” in the early hours of New Year's Day. The spokesman added that there were “reported deaths”.
A CBS reporter saw multiple people on the ground with injuries.
Witnesses told the organization that a vehicle plowed into a crowd and the driver then began firing a weapon, prompting police to return fire. Police have not confirmed this report.
Nola Ready, a New Orleans government agency, said on social media that there was a “mass casualty incident at Canal and Bourbon Street” and told people nearby to “get out of the area.”
