Last week, Meta decided that would be the case. replace your professional fact checking program with X-style “Community Notes” and it looks like a version of this feature is already being tested in Threads. Alessandro Paluzzi, a developer who frequently posts leaked information about Meta apps, shared three screenshots which show an early look at what community notes will look like in topics.
Paluzzi's images show the new “Write a Community Note” option in the menu, which can be accessed in the corner of a post in a thread. If you choose it, it looks like you'll be able to submit your note anonymously, and if it's rated as helpful, it will appear below the post. The entire setup is no different from how X uses community notes, which started out as a feature called “Birdwatch” on Twitter before Elon Musk acquired and renamed the company.
Engadget has reached out to Meta for information about the new Threads feature and will update this post if we learn more.
Community notes are just one of the ways a topic can be modified to accommodate Meta's new approach to moderation. It's unclear whether community notes or political content toggles will solve the real problems users have with Threads, or whether they will make anyone happier. However, they fit the image of the “free speech warrior” that Meta is trying to project.
