Tourists among 4 killed in a cable disaster south of Naples

Three tourists were among the four people who died, when the railway railway crashed south of Naples in Italy, including a British and Israeli woman, said an Italian official.

Only two of the three foreign victims have been identified since the accident on Thursday, said Marco de Rosa, spokesman for the mayor of Vico Equense, where one of the fatalities comes from.

According to the initial information, the traction cable broke, and one car crashed after both up and in the bottom that stopped when they traveled Monte Faito in the city of Castellammare di Stabia. The accident took place only a week after the cable car, popular due to the view of Mount Vesuvius and the bay of Naples, open to the season again.

Italian prosecutors opened an investigation into many killings and guilty disaster.

Officials say that the fifth person, who is also considered a foreign tourist, has been seriously injured and hospitalized in Naples. Sixteen passengers helped to get out of the second rope queue, which got stuck in the air near the top of the mountain after the incident.

Alpine Rescue Welies together with over 50 firefighters, policemen and civil protection services worked on the site all the time.

“The traction cable cracked. The emergency brake down the river worked, but apparently not the one on the cabin that entered the station,” said the mayor of Castellammare Luigi Vicinanza on Thursday. He added that there were regular checks of the railway line security, which runs three kilometers from the city to the top of the mountain.

The company claims that it has met the safety conditions

The company operating the service, the EAV Public Transport company, emphasized that the seasonal cable car re -opened with all the required security conditions.

“Re -opening took place a week ago after three months of testing each day, day and night,” said Eav Umberto de Gregorio. “This is something inexplicable.”

Investigators controlled the functionality of the cable car and the possibility that the strong wind in recent days was one of the causes of the accident.

The railway disaster in May 2021 in northern Italy killed 14 people, including six Israelis, including a family of four. In 1998, a low -flying American military jet cut the ski elevator cable in Cavalse, in Dolomites, killing 20 people.
