The traders abandoned the two migrant children at the southern border Texas this weekfled to Mexico when Texas authorities came to rescue the little girls, amid continuing concerns about the number of unaccompanied minors coming across the border.

The Texas Department of Public Safety it said its soldiers found two little girls, aged five and nine, after their gang abandoned them and fled to Mexico.

These girls from El Salvador, had only a letter with an address and a phone number, and were taken to the US Border Patrol.

The incident includes ongoing concerns about unaccompanied migrant children crossing the border, with numbers increasing dramatically during the recent crisis.

There have been several cases of abandoned children being rescued, usually with the phone numbers or addresses of their relatives or others written on paper or sewn onto clothes. When children arrive unaccompanied, they are eventually transferred to Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and released to US sponsors

The issue made headlines earlier this year when the DHS Office of Inspector General sent a report to Congress that found that, over the past five years, more than 32,000 immigrant children (UCs) they had never come to the immigration courts, and that. Immigration and Customs Enforcement it would not account for the place of all those who did not appear.

“During our ongoing review of ICE's ability to monitor the location and status of UCs released or transferred from the custody of the Department of Homeland Security and the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), we learned that ICE transferred more than 448,000 UCs to HHS from fiscal years 2019 to 2023,” the insider reported.

“However, ICE has not been able to account for the location of all UCs released by HHS and have not appeared as scheduled in immigration court. ICE has reported more than 32,000 UCs have failed to appear in their immigration court cases from FYs 2019 to 2023,” it said.

The watchdog also found that approx 291,000 unaccompanied migrant children has not been flagged for removal proceedings, because ICE fails to schedule immigration court dates and provide notices.

ICEs FY 2024 report found that, despite an increase of more than 500,000 unaccompanied minors from the US during the Biden administration, only 411 were removed in FY 2024, an increase from 212 FY 2023. In comparison, more than 4,000 were removed. in FY 2022.
