Trump DOJ asks Supreme Court to freeze student debt, environmental cases

the president Donald Trump The Justice Department asked the Supreme Court on Friday to block a handful of cases, including a challenge to one of former President Biden's student loan defaults.

The Supreme Court was expected to hear oral arguments for the cases in March or April and issue further decisions later this term. But Trump's Justice Department asked the Supreme Court to halt all short written deadlines, which would have put them on indefinite hold.

The court found that Biden's law had “numerous statutory and regulatory deficiencies.” Biden appealed to the Supreme Court, which agreed to hear the case earlier this month.

It is not uncommon for a new presidential administration to reverse its position on legal cases inherited from the previous administration. After Biden took office, the Justice Department asked the Supreme Court to block a challenge to Trump's attempt to use military funding to build a border wall. Biden stopped spending and the court dismissed the case.

The Biden administration took similar action with a case challenging Trump's “remain in Mexico” policy. The Supreme Court eventually threw the case dead after Biden overturned the policy.
