President Donald Trump says that he directs his government to re -open and expand Alcatraz, a well -known former prison on the hard -to -reach island of California, which has been closed for over 60 years.
In a post on his social network on Sunday evening, Trump wrote that “America was harassed for too long by cruel, violent and repetitive criminals, the remains of society, who would never contribute anything than misery and suffering. When we were a more serious nation, in the past, we did not hesitate to block the most dangerous criminals, and they would not bring them far from anyone, what they could hurt.
“That is why today I manage the prison office, along with the Department of Justice, the FBI and internal security, to re -open a fundamentally enlarged and rebuilt Alcatraz to accommodate the most ruthless and violent American criminals,” he wrote: “Opening Alcatraz will serve as a symbol of law, order and justice.”
Prison – infamously inevitable due to the strong ocean currents and the cold waters of the Pacific that surround them – was known as “rock” and some of the most famous criminals in the country, including the gangster Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly, were located.
It has long been part of cultural imagination and was the subject of many films, including Scale Starring Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage.
According to the FBI, in 29 years it was open, 36 men tried 14 separate escapes. Almost everyone was caught or did not survive the rehearsals.
The fate of three specific prisoners – John Anglina, his brother Clarence and Frank Morris – is a debate and was dramatized in the film from 1979 Escape from Alcatraz Starring Clinton Eastwood.
Alcatraz Island is currently the main tourist place that operates through the National Parks Service and is a designated national historical point.
