At a rally after the inauguration ceremony, President Trump brought a table onto the stage, at which he signed a series of executive orders. First of the evening aimed at 78 orders from the Biden administration, including recommendations October 2023 for AI.
“Revocation of this executive order will be the first of many steps the United States federal government will take to rebuild our institutions and our economy,” the text reads. There's no explanation for any of the options, just a long list with “the following actions are hereby withdrawn” as an introduction. Some of these were related to the ongoing fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, while others focused on immigration, climate change and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).
Biden's executive order lays out an ambitious plan to ensure protections for the general public and the federal government's best practices regarding artificial intelligence. Specifically, EO sought new safety and security standards in addition to protocols for artificial intelligence watermarking and civil rights and consumer protection. He also laid out measures to mitigate the impact on workers in AI-powered businesses and launched a new federal job portal seeking “more AI talent.”
In separate executive orders on Monday, Trump also withdrew the United States. from the Paris Climate Agreement for the second time. He did so during his first term, but Biden restored U.S. involvement when he took office.
