Two people were killed and 18 others injured after a small plane crashed into a commercial building in Southern California, officials said.
Ten people were taken to the hospital with injuries, the Fullerton Police Department said in an X post Thursday afternoon. Eight others were treated for injuries and released at the scene.
The single-engine van RV-10 crashed at 2:15 p.m. PST (8:15 p.m. GMT), according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Authorities have not released further details about how the crash happened. It is not clear whether the two dead were workers or were on board the plane.
Police said they were evacuating buildings in the area and asking people to stay away from the crash site.
Congressman Lou Correa, who represents the Orange County district, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Los Angeles, said the building that was hit was a furniture manufacturing business.
In an X post, Correa said at least a dozen of the victims were factory workers.
Aerial photos of the scene show parts of the plane inside the building. The accident also caused a fire, which was extinguished by fire brigade teams.
Security footage recorded from a building across the street showed a fiery explosion, according to local news reports.
“People are just shocked by the situation,” said witness Mark Anderson KRTSA-TV.
“It was just a big boom, and then one of the people came out and said, 'Oh my God, the building is on fire.'”
The area where the plane crashed is near the Fullerton Municipal Airport, about 6 miles (10 kilometers) from Disneyland.
The plane appeared to be returning to the airport shortly after takeoff, according to KRCA-TV.
It is the second plane to crash in the area in the past two months, according to CBS, the BBC's US affiliate.
On November 25, another plane crashed into a tree about a block away from this latest crash. No major Injuries were reported in this crash.
