“We encountered the moment in the collective security generation of our continent,” Starmer said at the British Telegraph weekend. “This is not only a matter of Ukraine's future – it is existential for Europe as a whole.”

He said the UK was ready to “play a leading role in accelerating security guarantees for Ukraine”, including more military support and, if necessary, put British troops on land as part of peacekeeping forces.

On the eve of the meeting in France, Tusk emphasized that European states should spend more on defense immediately.

“If we, Europeans, now do not spend on defense, we will be forced to spend 10 times more if we do not prevent a wider war,” Tusk said on social media.
