The Ukrainian military has been launching counterattacks in Kursk in an effort to prevent the destruction of captured areas.
The Ukrainian army has launched a new battle in the Kursk region of Russia as Moscow's forces continue to push into eastern Ukraine.
The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed on Sunday that the Ukrainian military had launched new attacks in recent years in Russia which began with a surprise attack in August.
Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, appeared to confirm the project in a Telegraph post.
“In the Kursk region, the Russian people are very worried. They were attacked from several sides, which was surprising,” he said.
Andriy Yermak, chief of staff of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said the attack had gone well.
“Kursk region, good news, Russia is getting what it deserves,” he wrote on Sunday.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the attack on Ukraine began on Sunday morning which included two tanks, an armored car, and 12 armored fighting vehicles with soldiers on their way to the Russian settlement in Berdin.
Most of them were destroyed, according to the ministry, which also released aerial photos of what it said were bombs that had taken out a self-propelled artillery unit of the Ukrainian army in Kursk.
The ministry said its forces killed 340 members of the Ukrainian army the previous day.
The Russian military says Ukraine has lost more than 49,000 servicemen in Kursk since it launched its offensive in August, along with 273 tanks, 44 rocket launchers, and hundreds of other vehicles and weapons.
Ukraine says Russia will lose 430,000 soldiers in 2024and that the North Korean troops brought to Kursk recently were seriously injured in front of the Russian sector.
Russian forces have been slowly pushing Ukrainian forces out of the Kursk holdouts, but have not been able to completely end the offensive.
Zelenskyy said that the session held in Kursk could play an important role in future “peace” talks. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he is ready to negotiate and remains ready to continue the war for a long time.
Russian troops continue to advance into the territory of Ukraine, having recaptured large areas in the east of the country.
They have been making significant progress in recent months, continuing to try to capture the Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region.
