Ukraine has detained its army's chief psychiatrist on alleged “illicit enrichment” charges related to profits of more than $1m (£813,000) amassed since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.
In a statement, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said the man participated in a commission deciding whether individuals were fit for military service.
The SBU statement did not mention his name – however a man named Oleg Druz was previously identified as the chief psychiatrist of the Ukrainian armed forces.
The SBU said he owned three apartments in or near Kiev, one in Odessa, two plots of land and several luxury BMW cars, and investigators searching his home also found $152,000 (£124,000) and 34,000 euro in cash.
The statement said the man had not declared the property, which was registered in the name of his wife, daughter, sons and other third parties.
He now faces ten years in prison on the alleged charges of illicit enrichment and filing a false declaration.
Druze was involved in a similar case in 2017 when he failed to declare two jeeps and several properties, leading to his suspension from office.
Ukraine has long struggled with endemic corruption.
In May, a Ukrainian MP was accused of embezzling £220,000, while in 2023 more than 30 military officials accused of taking bribes and smuggling people out of the country were fired in an anti-corruption purge.
Last year, Ukraine's parliament voted to abolish military medical commissions after several officials were accused of accepting bribes in exchange for exemption from military service.
