The peacekeeping forces of the United Nations organization in Lebanon says that his deputy commander was wounded after one of his convoys was “forcibly attacked”.
The provisional force of the UN in Lebanon (Unifil) said in a statement that the convoy was taking the peacekeepers to the Beirut airport when one of its carriage was fired.
The mission demanded a “full and immediate” investigation by the Lebanese authorities.
Both the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Nawaf Salam, and the Lebanese army condemned the attack on unifille and said they would work to arrest the participants.
Several videos, shared online, show a white UN vehicle, such as a group of young men carrying yellow flags, pursue and beat what they seem to be peacekeepers while trying to run.
Separate footage shows a group of men shouting while kicking, hitting and getting on a UN -based convoy on a dark road.
The injured Deputy Commander of Unifil, who was not baptized, returns home after completing his mission, the statement said.
“We are shocked by this scandalous attack on peacekeepers who serve to restore security and stability in southern Lebanon over a difficult time,” added.
“Attacks against peacekeepers are gross violations of international law and can represent war crimes. We require a full and immediate investigation by the Lebanese authorities and all perpetrators to be tried.”
Proponents of the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah gathered outside Beirut Airport since Thursday because of the defending between Lebanon and Iran, who saw two Iranian aircraft blocked by landing in the Lebanese capital.
Dozens of Lebanese citizens stuck in Iran have left the question.
The Movement of Amal, a group, an ally with Hezbollah, said “the attack on unifille is an attack on southern Lebanon” and described it as a “breakthrough in civil peace.”
Lebanese Interior Minister Ahmed Al-Hajar told the state media that he would convene a security meeting on Saturday in the light of the attack, calling him a “crime against peacekeeping forces.”
Unifil was created to monitor a buffer zone created near the border with Israel after the end of the Lebanon War 2006 and has posts in South Lebanon.
