The sustainable technology leader Ferphone unveiled its latest modular device on Thursday at an event in Amsterdam, presenting a clear challenge for mainstream manufacturers of phones everywhere. The Fairphone 6 is a fully repaired Android phone, built to last, with what the company says is the lowest carbon imprint.
Fairphone is a manufacturer of phones like no one else. Instead of being just another technology company that makes an Android generic phone, Fairphone is a Dutch social company driven, which sources ethically paid for fair salary bonuses through the supply chain where factory conditions include protection against harmful chemicals and voice voice. It also encourages Fairphone owners to replace parts instead of rejecting their devices and often upgrading.
Although this is the technical Fairphone 6, the company wants it to be known as only Fairphone – the thinking that you should not upgrade your phone every few years to the next generation of devices. Fairphone promises seven Android updates and support for software and fixed parts by 2033 with this device.
The previous phone of the Fairphone – Fairphone 5 – scored 7/10 in our review. But it also earned a 10/10 score for tears by iFixit. Ifixit is a leader in providing tools and knowledge for people to fix their electronics and have been at the forefront of pressure legislation to repair the right.
Fairphone is completely modular, with replaceable elements that make it easy to repair and more fun. You can replace the battery, screen, camera, ports and other components – and use the rear cover to attach accessories such as carrying or cardboard cable.
Turning on the green on the phone's side allows you to switch between the standard Android 15 interface, complete with all the features of Google Gemini AI you can expect, and dismissed monochrome interface “Essentials” that offers access to basic fections, including calling, messages and web.
Our biggest criticism of the Fairphone 5 was the poor battery life and camera performance. According to Fairphone, its new device packs a larger 53-hour battery, along with AI-Hanced 50-megapixel camera. We hope these will fulfill their promise, which will be crucial to real evidence in the future, as the rest of the industry adheres to its annual upgrade cycle.
The chip inside is Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7S Gen 3, which also provides chips for all the best Android phones on the market. Its performance will also help determine the longevity of the phone.
The Fairphone 6 will be available for £ 499 ($ 680) from yourcoop and AO in the UK and through Murena in the United States.
