ZURICH, Jan. 09, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — WeRide Inc. (NASDAQ: WRD), the global leader in autonomous driving technology, today announced the deployment of its autonomous Robobus service at Zurich Airport in partnership with. Airport (VIE:) Zürich AG and Swiss Transit Lab (STL), marking an important step in bringing autonomous travel solutions to Europe's largest airport, and building on WeRide's successful European operations, including its latest autonomous service at Roland-Garros during the 2024 French Open.
The WeRide Robobus, which seats nine passengers, will be Europe's first commercial airport autonomous bus project. It will serve airport staff on a dedicated road connecting the staff entrance at gate 101 to the maintenance area at gate 130. The service will begin in the first quarter of 2025.
Flughafen Zürich AG works with airports in Brussels and Amsterdam that are also testing autonomous vehicle technology. Before the start of the Robobus test, WeRide's autonomous taxi, Robotaxi, completed a road map at Zurich Airport, showing that WeRide's Robotaxi will have many applications in Switzerland.
In the foothills of the Alps, Zurich Airport presents difficult challenges for autonomous driving technology due to the complex operating environment and weather conditions. WeRide successfully overcomes these challenges with its strong technical strength and rich implementation experience, providing a mature and reliable solution.
The Zurich Airport service follows a successful deployment to Paris, where Robobus provided efficient transport services on a five-kilometre route during the French Open, as part of an ongoing partnership Renault (EPA:) Advocacy group for low-carbon public transportation solutions.
The Robobus deployment extends WeRide's advanced autonomous driving technology, which has been extensively tested and validated in more than 30 cities in seven countries. The first phase at Zurich Airport includes an on-board security operator, with plans to transition to remote monitoring operations.
WeRide has fully developed and thoroughly tested technology, meets all existing legal and security requirements at Zurich Airport and guarantees that it will meet the set data protection requirements, Flughafen Zürich AG said in a statement.
The company will work with the Swiss Transit Lab to ensure the smooth operation of the service.
