Liverpool led 2-0 at half-time in their EFL Cup tie against Southampton when Darwin Nunez scored the opener.

The Reds have made an incredible start to life under Arne Slott as the Merseyside club currently sit top of both the Premier League and Champions League.

The Carabao Cup is probably the lowest trophy on the Dutch manager's list of priorities, but as the reigning champions, the former Feyenoord boss took the competition seriously.

Slott fielded a strong line-up against Southampton on Wednesday night and it was his two big stars who were instrumental in first goal of the evening.

Trent Alexander-Arnold showed incredible skill to run away from two Saints stars before his pass eventually found its way to Nunes, who finished clinically.

The goal clearly shows why Real Madrid want Alexander-Arnold as the right-back continues to be linked with a move away from Liverpool. The 26-year-old is out of contract at Anfield at the end of the season and there has been no sign of a new deal until 2025.

This was recently announced by the star of the England team negotiations regarding his contract will not be played out in publicwhich has not allayed the fears of Liverpool fans amid links to Real.
