Rio Ngumoha is on the Liverpool bench for the Southampton match

Liverpool take on Southampton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night and Arne Slott made a big statement by including Rio Ngumoha on the bench for the match at St Mary's.

The reigning champions are looking to bring the EFL Cup back to Anfield again this season as the Merseyside club look to build on their impressive start to the 2024/25 campaign with victory over the Saints.

Liverpool currently sit top of the Premier League and Champions League standings, and Slot hasn't had much to do to get there.

The Carabao Cup gives the Dutch manager the opportunity to give minutes to some of his fringe players and there is an interesting name on the bench at the Merseyside club.

My slot has included highly rated wonderkid Rio Ngumoha in his squad for the trip to Southampton and the 16-year-old could make his Liverpool debut on Wednesday night in what would be a major milestone in his career.

Liverpool signed Ngumoha from Chelsea in the summer as the Merseyside club sought to increase the talent in its academy. The 16-year-old has been part of the Reds' under-18 squad for the current campaign and has already made 13 appearances across multiple competitions.

The Englishman is a left winger and arrived at Liverpool with a big reputation as Chelsea were big fans of the youngster and was not happy to see Ngumoha go. The reason for the player's departure from Stamford Bridge was that he did not agree the terms of a new deal Liverpool Echo, it's an opportunity the Reds pounced on.

Ngumoha will be looking to show the world what he's made of if he gets minutes against Southampton and it could be the start of an incredible story for the talented winger at Anfield.
