Speaking in a BCCI tribute video, Ashwin recalled the emotional moment that shaped his resolve. “Look, I don't know where to start, honestly, I guess. I made a promise to myself in 2012. We lost the series against Englanda complicated one. It was very early in my career and I was just telling myself, we'll never lose another one, and I promised myself that. How many wickets you take, how many hours of runs you make, in 10 years, you won't remember them. It's the memories that matter,” Ashwin said in a video released by the BCCI.
Ashwin promises that he will never let India lose Test series at home
India, under his influence, went on to win a world record 18 consecutive Test series at home over the next 11 years. During this series, Ashwin played a pivotal role, scoring 320 wickets in 53 home matches with remarkable consistency.
Ashwin ended his illustrious Test career as India's second-highest wicket-taker with 537 wickets in 106 matches. He has scored over 1500 runs including three centuries with his impressive batting.
Reflecting on his journey, Ashwin expressed gratitude. “But if someone had told me in 2011 that I would take so many wickets, I would have retired in 2024 on December 18. I wouldn't have believed it because I knew it was a game I loved, but I never expected to get so much love and so many wickets and so many runs too. I am very happy, a deep sense of gratitude to all those who supported me, all those who challenged me. Very happy today. Thank you,” he added.
Notably, Ashwin won 11 Player of the Series awards, equaling Muttiah Muralitharan's record in Test cricket history. His match-winning performances cemented his status as one of India's all-time greats.
