BCCI will elect new secretary, treasurer on January 12 in Mumbai
of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the elections for the posts of secretary and treasurer on January 12. A Special General Meeting (SGM) will be held in Mumbai to fill these key positions. The posts became vacant earlier this month Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar resigned.
The BCCI constitution mandates that any vacant position must be filled within 45 days. The upcoming SGM fulfills this requirement as it will take place within 43 days. The state units have already been notified of the meeting, after the last decision of the Supreme Council.
Why are the elections taking place?
Jay Shah, who served as BCCI secretary, was appointed as the youngest BCCI chairman International Cricket Council (ICC) on 1 December. Ashish Shelar has resigned after being sworn in as a cabinet minister of the Maharashtra government.
The Lodha Committee reforms, approved by the Supreme Court, state that an individual cannot hold two posts simultaneously. This rule applies to public servants, ministers and officials in the sports administration. As a result, both Shah and Shelar had to vacate their respective roles in the BCCI.
Electoral Process and Interim Arrangements
To ensure a transparent election process, former Chief Election Commissioner Achal Kumar Jyoti has been appointed as the Election Officer. Jyoti, a retired Gujarat cadre IAS officer, has previous experience in managing critical elections in India.
At present, Assam's Devajit Saikia is serving as interim secretary while the post of treasurer remains vacant. The January 12 election is expected to be unanimous, with consensus possible among BCCI state associations.
