Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has insisted he has no regrets once again leaving Marcus Rashford out of his squad for Thursday's Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Rashford, who admitted wanting a “new challenge“Having gone down for the Manchester derby, it was chased away from home by Spurs secured a dramatic 4-3 winin which Alejandro Garnacho appeared from the bench after also being dropped for the derby.
Before the game, Amorim was asked to explain his decision to drop Rashford.
“The selection,” he said Sky Sports. “I picked the players I felt were ready to handle the demands of playing a strong game.
“I try to visualize the whole week and then pick my players. Just selection.”
It was a risk that didn't pay off here as United were knocked out of the cup, but Amorim insisted he wouldn't hesitate to make the same decision again, given the chance.
“If I feel I do the right thing for the team, it's never been a mistake united continued the head coach. “We have to make a selection. It wasn't a mistake because I think I'm doing the best for the team the way I see things.
“The guys who came on the field (Amad Diallo and Garnacho) changed the game.”
Amorization already has publicly stated his desire to keep Rashford at United and insisted once again that the door remains open for an immediate recall to the squad.
“Of course, he is a Manchester United player”, concluded Amorim. “Tomorrow we have training, Marcus Rashford will be there, preparing for the next game and you will see the selection.”
